The Equipment Operator I is a safety-sensitive position subject to DOT drug & alcohol procedures, must be available to report to work during regular business hours and must be available after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. This entry level CDL required position has a focus primarily on the operation of Outagamie County’s fleet of dump trucks. Also operates several medium and light pieces of equipment and moves materials from manufacturing and distribution centers to jobsites. Equipment operator I’s are responsible for winter plowing activities and maintaining a safe and efficient road system. HOURS:Winter Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Summer Mon-Thurs 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Work schedule fluctuates with the change of seasons and workloads. Flexibility is required based on workloads. Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes. Key Responsibilities: |
The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. - Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes.
- Plows snow from highways, applying chlorides and abrasives as necessary
- Operate a dump truck to transport various materials to construction sites such as hot mix asphalt, stone, dirt, concrete, debris, etc.
- Complete a pre and post trip to identify mechanical issues.
- Effectively maintain equipment through inspections, greasing and lubing, servicing, making minor repairs and adjustments, and operating appropriately
- Ensure materials are loaded correctly to not exceed weight limits of vehicle.
- Understand WIS DOT work zone field manual to correctly setup various traffic control layouts.
- Perform maintenance duties on the County highway system along with related maintenance jurisdictions including pot hole patching, crack filling, sweeping, mowing, brush cutting, guardrail repair, bridge maintenance, etc.
- Remove hazards and debris from roadways
- Erect and remove snow fence, repair fences and barriers on right of way, landscape roadsides, install erosion control
- Knowledge and ability to set up levels, lasers and utility locators.
- Operate small tools such as chainsaws, string trimmers, brush cutters, power saws, jack hammers, impacts, painters, drills, etc.
- Operate hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, wrenches, etc.
- Operate vehicles such as trucks, dump trucks, plows, brooms, forklifts, loaders, compactors, operate tar kettles, and other small equipment as assigned
- Maintains grounds adjacent to highway facilities, planting and cutting grass, laying sod, installing landscape materials, etc.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required including nights and weekends.
- Completes and submits records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project daily.
- Expected to work in a variety of weather conditions
- Conduct duties in a safe diligent manner at all times
- Ability to communicate relevant information to team members in a respectful and constructive way
- Maintain a clean and safe worksite

Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements: |
- Graduate from high school or G.E.D. and
- Experience in the operation of light duty equipment desired
- Valid Commercial Driver's License Class B, C, D with endorsement N (Tanker) is required. As well as the ability to legally operate CMV's with Air Brakes, Manual Transmissions, and Tank Cargo (No restrictions such as L, Z, E, O or X).
- 2 or more years in the construction industry and in the operation of light duty equipment desired.
- Or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

- Knowledge of and ability to operate and service trucks, tractors, and light equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
- Ability to apply basic computer skills to enter time, record materials, check emails, etc.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, etc.
- Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete records, and prepare clear and comprehensive reports
- Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
