Position Overview
Reporting to and working closely with the CEO, the Senior Director of Resource Development will design and execute a comprehensive resource development strategy, including ongoing fundraising activities, planned giving, and major capital/other campaigns. The Director of Resource Development will also form and lead the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley’s resource development team.
Essential Job Functions
Leadership
- Design a comprehensive development strategy, identifying funds needed, targets, and tactics.
- Provide leadership and direction to the CEO and Board in executing all resource development activities effectively.
- Form, develop, and manage a team of resource development professionals of sufficient skill, talent, and number necessary to execute fundraising plans successfully.
- Actively mentor and otherwise support the professional development of all resource development team members.
- Oversee the resource development team, extending and sustaining values-based culture
- built on autonomy, mastery and purpose throughout.Take action to help create and sustain a values-based organizational culture that elevates trust, inclusion, and belonging, and that leaves ample room for individual and team autonomy, creates a clear and supported path toward position mastery, and wherein all staff and volunteers believe their success in fulfilling their role is necessary to the achievement of the organization’s mission.

- Create or assist in the creation of cross-departmental teams to advance strategic priorities.

- In partnership with the CEO, act as a liaison to the Board of Directors and your assigned committee(s), helping the Board meet its responsibilities by advising, informing, and educating Directors.
Strategic Planning, Execution & Agility
- In partnership with the CEO and the Board of Directors, contribute to the development of long-term, comprehensive strategic plans that substantially advance the organization’s mission and vision.
- Monitor and evaluate the progress of strategic initiatives, making necessary adjustments to ensure successful execution.
- Demonstrate agility by adapting to changes in the internal and external environment and making timely decisions to keep the organization on track toward its goals.
Management
- Ensure operational goals and objectives align with and advance the organization's strategic priorities.
- Regularly implement strategies to promote team development and performance, inclusive of but not limited to active listening, team performance assessments, coaching, team-based learning, recognition, fun, and transparent communications.
- Strive to meet and surpass the expectations of youth, families, staff, volunteers, Board, funders, and other key stakeholders.
- Support the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects.
- Ensure spending stays within budgeted amounts, get advance approval on expenditures as required, meet allowable cost requirements, and support the successful delivery of programs and services in alignment with all restricted funding sources’ expectations and requirements.
- Finish work by established deadlines within the framework of established guidelines and policies.
- Address issues and concerns in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.
- Ensure records are up-to-date, accurate, and organized. Prioritize and organize multiple tasks and responsibilities in a way that meets daily responsibilities while continuing to work toward longer-term objectives.
- Coordinate, facilitate, and support the ongoing review of policies and procedures, recommending changes and additions when appropriate.
Resource Development
- Develop and implement strategies and tactical plans for single and multi-year resource development efforts in partnership with the CEO and the Board that feature:
- Research and analysis of agency, corporate, individual, governmental, and foundation donors and prospective donors, their capacity and philanthropic interests, and their preferred ways of being approached and engaged.
- Preparation and presentation of proposals for corporate, foundation, individual, and governmental support.
- Best practice donor stewardship activities.
- Best-in-class special events that bring sufficient numbers of donors closer to the organization’s mission and expand its support base.
- Multi-faceted tactics, including but not limited to planned giving, direct mail, and annual campaigns.
- Giving incentives such as matching gift challenges.
- Timely gift processing functions that ensure donations are receipted and acknowledged in a donor-centered manner and meet internal goals and IRS requirements.
- Control Resource Development Department expenditures within budget and maintain donor and financial records in accordance with industry standards and ethics.
- In collaboration with the CEO, provide direction and support to the organization’s marketing and communications staff to build organizational awareness and maintain public trust.
- Support the development and distribution of marketing documents, including the annual community impact report and regular donor development and stewardship communications.
- Motivate and support committees responsible for planning and performing resource development activities.
- Train staff to understand how their actions and contributions to quality work and to the maximization of resources enhance the organization’s fundraising efforts and overall financial health.
Safety and Risk Management
- Ensure donor privacy and the protection of all personally identifiable information.
- Ensure safety practices meet or exceed the membership requirements of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the legal requirements of the federal, state, and local governments, and contractual requirements as may exist, for example, with school districts or lessors.
- Support the development and implementation of new or amended new or amended policies, practices, and processes that further mitigate and minimize safety risks.
- Support implementation of comprehensive measures to control and minimize risks in all aspect of safety such as ongoing safety assessments, behavior management systems, facility inspections and compliance tests, incident response planning and implementation, training, and measurement.
Human Resources, Supervision, and Talent Development
- Ensure the productive, ethical, and effective performance of all Resource Development Department team members.
- Assist in finding, recruiting, and training board members.
- Drive and support efforts that help ensure the organization has an acceptable number of qualified staff and effective leadership and management structures to operate effectively and deliver programs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence and guide your team to do so as well, aligning efforts with the organization’s values, mission, strategic priorities, and policies.
- Ensure workplace operations comply with all relevant regulations, policies, and best practices.
- Provide active supervision of all direct reports, inclusive of ongoing coaching, regular one-on-one meetings, performance evaluations, goal setting, and talent development.
- Participate in available coaching opportunities, regular one-on-one meetings with supervisor, performance evaluations, and goal setting.
- Model a commitment to learning and development by following talent development requirements, ensuring your team does the same, and creating and following a professional development plan.
- Create and manage succession plans for key roles in your area of responsibility.
- Ensure that workplace operations elevate equity and trauma-informed practices that promote a positive, inclusive, and safe work environment in accordance with all relevant regulations, organizational policy, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
The Senior Director of Resource Development requires a majority combination of the following:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or University
Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE)
Minimum of three years of successful resource development experience
Supervisory skills
Skills and Requirements
Ability to nurture and maintain effective working relationships with Club staff, board members, volunteers, community groups, and other related agencies.
Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey information in a timely, open, and clear manner.
Reliable transportation.
Knowledge of and ability to effectively use computers, software, and other technology tools.
