Accountant I

SUMMARY

The Accountant I is accountable for providing accurate financial information, maintaining, and reconciling general ledger accounts, and preparing financial reports and financial statements for the Jewelers Mutual group of companies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Own the expense allocation process which assigns costs to business units, legal entities, as well as expense classifications
  • Compile and analyze financial information and accurately document business transactions.
  • Prepare standard and ad hoc journal entries to include expense allocations, agency activity, credit card transaction data feeds, premium tax expense accruals, various receivables, and others
  • Investigate and correct errors and inconsistencies in financial journal entries, documents, reports and financial statements
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations including researching and documenting un-reconciled balances and other variances from expectations and, if applicable, prepare correcting journal entries
  • Preparation of the quarterly and annual insurance company statutory financial statements including face pages and footnotes
  • Utilize general ledger tools to automate the input of financial data into statutory financial statement software
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual state form filings, and select premium tax returns.
  • Verify and add new vendors to accounting software daily, and process various updates.
  • Own maintenance, annual access review, and other oversight related to our payment processing software for vendor invoice and internal expense reports
  • Prepare and organize financial information requests for external auditors and regulators
  • Identify and implement general ledger and monthly close process improvement opportunities
  • Follow the agency operations business unit and be the point person on agency transactions from an accounting perspective
  • Participate in department and strategic corporate project teams as requested

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) or equivalent experience in Finance or Accounting.
  • 0 - 2 years related experience. 
  • Property/casualty insurance background and jewelry industry experience are helpful.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word).
  • Experience with accounting and financial software desired
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects or controls; and talk or hear.
