Provide complex and complicated paralegal support to attorneys in gathering facts, preparing documents and general preparation for criminal litigation.
- Independently identify, compile, and organize exhibits and case file documents in preparation for hearings and trials.
- Independently draft complex pleadings, legal documents, letters and memos including complaints, affidavits, subpoenas, discovery documents, satisfactions, judgments, findings of fact, press releases, motions, etc.
- Plan, create and administer computer databases to assist in case litigation.
- Perform complex legal research, shepardize, utilize WESTLAW or other databases for research, as necessary.
- Participate in strategy sessions.
- Gather and analyze facts by contacting local, state, and federal agencies and other sources to obtain information for various phases of criminal litigation. Conduct any necessary follow-up.
- Assist the assigned attorneys in monitoring and compiling discovery/document requests and productions. Organize, review and analyze documents produced by other parties.
- Locate and interview witnesses for hearings and trials.
- Attend depositions and assist attorneys in preparing for depositions. Abridge and index deposition and hearing transcripts.
- Act as a liaison between client agencies, witnesses, local government representatives and legal staff as necessary to keep everyone informed of case status, scheduling changes, meetings, etc.
- Prepare, arrange for and/or serve subpoenas, summons and complaints and other legal documents.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of case-related statistics into reports as requested.
- Complete special projects as assigned by the District Attorney.
Provide complex and complicated paralegal support to attorneys in case investigation, final trial preparation, at hearings, and trials.- Compile information about prospective jurors. Attend and assist with jury selection: draft list of suggested voir dire questions for attorney; take notes during voir dire; and consult with attorney regarding who to strike or keep.
- Coordinate and assist in final witness preparation.
- Maintain a witness list with all the necessary contact information and coordinate scheduling of appearances, assist witnesses with directions, witness fees, etc.
- Identify potential exhibits and prepare them for effective use during litigation, including creating charts and summaries, utilizing various current technologies.
- Evaluate, review evidence and testimony and prepare witnesses for trials.
- Assemble and maintain all physical evidence to be used at trial and arrange for transport if necessary.
- Assist attorneys by organizing and compiling trial notebooks.
- Attend and take notes of testimony, objections, rulings, etc., throughout entire proceedings and assist attorney in making sure all issues and/or testimony is presented. Denote discrepancies in testimony.
- Maintain a log of all exhibits presented and received into evidence.
- Assemble all demonstrative equipment to be used at trial and assist in the setup and operation of audiovisual equipment, including Elmos, TV monitors, visual presentation equipment, etc.
- Manage and organize pretrial case investigations. Identify potential sources of information, travel statewide as needed to contact and interview potential witnesses, gather and summarize factual information for review by attorneys.
- Act as a liaison with court personnel as necessary.
Collection, Organization, Maintenance and Distribution of Discovery 1. Serve as a liaison and contact person with the Law Enforcement personnel and other agencies to identify and collect all relevant discovery.
2. Collect, analyze, redact, and organize all relevant discovery, including finalizing transcripts.
3. Use standard software tools to manage and analyze complex document productions.
4. Summarize and index complex discovery productions.
5. Notify and advise attorney of potential problem areas with case facts, parties and/or potential witnesses.
6. Prepare medical, employment, educational and other releases, as necessary, to obtain necessary documents in case preparation and obtain executed copies from opposing counsel.
7. Prepare accurate, concise and factual field notes, expository reports, statements and affidavits, case summaries, statistical reports, charts, demonstrative evidence, etc.
