Each Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the Appleton American Legion Post 38 hosts popular Brat Frys on their grounds (3220 W. College Ave., in Appleton) that draw hundreds of people. Proceeds from those weekly events that occur through October benefit the Appleton American Legion Post 38’s programs which support local veterans and their families, and so much more.
On Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, Appleton American Legion Post 38 extended the hours of their weekly Brat Fry to be from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and redirected all of the proceeds from that day’s efforts to the Old Glory Honor Flight. “It was a Brat Fry Extravaganza”, said Appleton American Legion Post 38 Commander, Jarrod Coulter. “Our goal was to exceed the amount that was raised at our 2024 event for Old Glory Honor Flight, which was $7,000.00”, continued Coulter. With the support of thousands that patronized the event and the selfless generosity of the event’s partners, yesterday’s event raised $16,000.00 for Old Glory Honor Flight!!!!!!!!!
Special features at this year’s event included new menu items to include corn on the cob donated by The Bar on Lynndale, a visit by fury friends from the Fox Valley Humane Association, musical entertainers, and the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on display.
Old Glory Honor Flight was founded in 2009 by a loyal group of volunteers based in Appleton, WI. They are dedicated to their mission of "Honoring Our Local Veterans One Mission at a Time" which includes all veterans who served prior to May 7, 1975. The Old Glory Honor Flight missions take veterans completely free of charge on trips to Washington, D.C. Every detail of their day-long trip has the vets' best interest in mind to ensure they have a safe, memorable trip and one that conveys appreciation and admiration from our community. On each flight, they travel with trained volunteers who act as guardian escorts, a volunteer medical team, professional photographers and a host of others like the D.C. Park Police who ensure the veterans get the 'red carpet' treatment. Old Glory Honor Flight has organized other missions beyond Washington, D.C., to include a “Return to Pearl”, “Return to Nam”, and others.
The American Legion is America’s largest veterans service organization. It is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1919. Together, members of the Appleton American Legion Post 38, the Appleton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38, and the Appleton Sons of The American Legion Squadron 38 make up what is known as the Appleton American Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.
