Imagine wandering into an art gallery where the frame becomes a doorway into a new world. Starting September 19, families can experience just that when Framed: Step Into Art™, an immersive traveling exhibit sponsored locally by Jewelers Mutual, opens at the Building for Kids Children’s Museum [BFKCM].
This interactive exhibit transforms famous works of art into larger-than-life play environments. As children step inside, they uncover and connect with the stories, history, and cultural influences behind each work of art.
“Framed: Step Into Art gives families a unique opportunity to experience iconic works of art in a hands-on and engaging way,” said Oliver Zornow, President of the BFKCM. “We’re excited to bring in an exhibit that encourages visitors to develop an appreciation for art and learn how it can be used to tell powerful stories.”
Exhibit Features:
- “Dinner for Threshers” by Grant Wood – Step into Grant Wood’s Dinner for Threshers and explore rural life at the turn of the century. Tend chickens, prepare a meal, set the table, enjoy a pretend dinner, and mix and match farmers’ patterned shirts.
- “Camp at Lake O’Hara” by John Singer Sargent – Journey to the Canadian Rockies in 1916 through Sargent’s Camp at Lake O’Hara. Explore a campsite, cook a pretend meal over the campfire, share stories, and create a magnetic scene showing what today’s campsite might look like.
- “Corn Festival” by Diego Rivera – Travel to Mexico City through Rivera’s Corn Festival. Explore a recreation of the fresco, decorate a flower tower with corn husks and ribbons, and add your own touch to a community mural.
- Clementine Hunter – Load a cart with beautiful flowers and climb onto a giant rooster to take them to town in this colorful, creative scene inspired by Clementine Hunter.
In addition, the BFKCM will be hosting special events tied to the exhibit, including a 21+ adults-only event, an art-themed overnight event, an exclusive member night, and more.
