Major Southern Business District Road Reconstruction Project Completed in Neenah

Elected officials, department and community leaders, and key project partners gathered in the City of Neenah to celebrate the completion of an extensive 1.5-mile reconstruction of South Commercial Street between Tyler and Stanley Streets.

The estimated $10.8 million project was funded with 69% federal dollars and 31% municipal dollars and was completed on schedule over a period of seven months. The significant infrastructure improvements comprise one of the largest street reconstruction projects in the city’s history. Upgrades include replacement of the storm sewer, pavement, sidewalks, driveways, streetscaping, and traffic signals.

“Completion of the South Commercial Street reconstruction is more than a milestone in infrastructure — it’s a strong reaffirmation of our commitment to Neenah’s future,” said Mayor Jane Lang, City of Neenah. “This project, delivered on time and on budget, reflects what we can accomplish when city leadership, state and federal partners, and the community work together toward a shared vision. With safer streets, renewed sidewalks, upgraded utilities, and refreshed streetscape, we’re not just repairing pavement — we’re investing in a more walkable, vibrant, and thriving southern gateway for Neenah. I’m proud of this achievement and excited for the opportunities it unlocks for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”

The project, which is part of the City of Neenah’s plan for revitalizing the north-south Commercial Street business district corridor and southern entrance to the city, represents an important investment in improving safety, walkability and economic vitality through the coordination and commitment of multiple collaborative partners. The city extends its gratitude to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission for their assistance with this project.

“I’m proud of how the Regional Planning Commission works with communities to move projects forward,” said Melissa Kraemer Badtke, Executive Director of the East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. “With responsibility for the Appleton (Fox Cities) Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Commission brings together local elected leaders to guide the use of federal transportation funding in our region. South Commercial Street is part of the regional transportation system, and this project demonstrates how strong, collaborative partners working together can move visionary plans to successful completion.”
