UW–Oshkosh Dedicates The India Corner as New Resource for Global Learning and Cultural Understanding

The University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh formally dedicated The India Corner on June 18 in Dorian Boyland Hall, where the new educational resource will serve students, faculty, staff, and community members for years to come. The dedication welcomed Consul General of India in Chicago Somnath Ghosh, community leaders, business partners, faculty, staff, students, and guests from across the region.
Established in partnership with the Consulate General of India in Chicago, The India Corner will serve as a resource for students, faculty, staff, and community members interested in exploring India's history, culture, literature, philosophy, and contemporary contributions. The collection includes books and educational materials intended to support learning, cultural understanding, and global engagement.
The dedication ceremony featured remarks from Chancellor Manohar Singh and Consul General Ghosh, who highlighted the role of higher education in fostering global awareness and meaningful cross-cultural dialogue.
"Universities prepare students for careers, but our greater responsibility is to help them develop perspective, judgment and an understanding of their place in an interconnected world," Chancellor Singh said. "The India Corner reflects our commitment to global learning and the exchange of ideas that enrich the educational experience for all students."
The India Corner joins a growing network of similar educational resources established at universities across the United States and around the world. These initiatives provide opportunities for students and communities to engage with global cultures, histories, and perspectives through educational programming and resource collections.
"The India Corner represents more than a cultural resource," Ghosh said. "It is a space that promotes dialogue, learning and mutual understanding, reflecting the values that connect our two democracies and strengthen relationships between people, communities and nations."
The event also featured participation from faculty members whose scholarship and teaching focus on global history, religion, and culture, underscoring the educational mission of the initiative and its relevance across academic disciplines.
The India Corner reflects UW–Oshkosh's ongoing commitment to global engagement and preparing students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. The resource will remain available to students, faculty, staff, and community members as a place for learning, exploration, and cultural discovery.
